CREATIVE HISTORIES - Animation Principles

As I have decided to create my video using animation rather than live action I have been looking at the 12 basic principles of animation by Disney. I wanted to try to see if I could put one of these into practice using AfterEffects. I was looking specifically at Squash and Stretch, the idea that a sense of weight and flexibility can be applied to an object in movement bu making it appear longer and thinner while moving and shorter and wider on impact while still retaining the same volume. My initial tests just using my eye didn’t look realistic or that the object was moving within the real realms of physics.

So I decided to have another attempt but this time using calculations and measurements to the movement of the object more accurate.

The above shows my attempt at calculating the movement of the object and its various states at different heights. After a few attempts and some tweaking to the numbers I was able to make a much more realistic looking movement using the squash and stretch principle.

Given more time it would have been very beneficial to attempt to test all 12 of the principles. But having tried just one has given me a lot more insight into how animation works visually as well as technically.
