50 THINGS - British Museum Archives

I managed to get get a tour of the archives of the British Museum. What I was looking for here was the use of labelling, categorisation and organising of the artefacts. I wanted to see how this was done and how each object was individually treated. This was a really insightful trip and gave me a lot to think about with my own collection of objects. I have been looking for additional data that I can assign to my items to give the viewer information. To me it seems that the cataloging of objects fits really well within information design. I am at risk of straying too far from information design and focussing too much on a curated poster simply displaying objects with no context. To avoid this I want to make the most of the information that I can get out of each object.

This object sheet is filled in whenever a new item arrives at the museum. For what is essentially a spreadsheet, I have found this to be very useful. Each are 6 pages long this document has a huge amount of information that needs to be recorded for each item. While it is unlikely that I can assign this much information to each of my items I can try use this to try to make a similar labelling system. That I can use in my own spreadsheet and poster.
